Spiti Valley Road Trip in Overview

A home to some of the highest villages, oldest A home to some of the highest villages, monasteries, and challenging yet stunning landscapes, the Spiti valley trek is an extraordinary experience in itself. At an altitude of 12,500 Ft. Spiti Valley Road Trip

Spiti valley is a cold desert located in Himachal Pradesh. The valley originates from the Kunzum pass and is often referred to as ‘the middle land’ – meaning the land between India and Tibet or the land surrounded by mountain ranges on all sides. Spiti River, originating from the east of the Kunzum Pass, flows through the center of Spiti Valley, giving its name to the valley and the district.

The history of Spiti valley tells a tale of the Mesozoic Era. Around 150 million years ago, the landmass on earth was split into two continents – Laurasia and Gondwana. Tethys Sea, the only ocean, used to be between these continents.

These two continents started drifting towards each other resulting in a collision and formation of the Himalayas. Tethys Sea disappeared and the once-living creatures of the sea died and turned into fossils. Spiti Valley is the part of the trans-Himalayan range where the Tethys Sea used to exist and the fossilized creatures can still be found in few areas of the valley.

Fossil imprints on stone are easy to find and while you are here you will come across shops selling them. A land lost in time and a place that humanity forgot about, the Spiti valley trek is one of the unexplored adventurous destinations of India and this is exactly why you should cover a trip to this tranquil place.

Spiti valley Distance and Duration Spiti Valley Road Trip

Shimla-Spiti valley’s road span is 426 Km approximately starting from Shimla and ending at Kalpa. Spiti valley road trip is a memorable excursion in the Himalayan mountains.

There are two known road routes that one can take to reach Spiti – Shimla-Kaza and Manali-Kaza. A hard choice, we recommend our travelers to take the Shimla-Spiti route for the beautiful reason of all-year accessibility to Spiti via Shimla. Spiti Valley Road Trip

Specialty of Shimla-Spiti route Spiti Valley Road Trip

While both routes (Manali and Shimla) offer their advantages and experiences, here are three reasons to take the Shimla-Spiti route: Spiti Valley is a cold and deserted high altitude destination. Hence, your body will require a certain amount of acclimatization before you enter the Spiti Valley.

Going via the Shimla side will help you gradually increase the altitude and your body gets acclimatized properly. Hence, there is less chance of getting hit with acute mountain sickness.

Traversing the Hindustan – Tibet Highway is one of the world’s most treacherous or adventurous roads. Riding or driving on Hindustan – Tibet Road is a journey in itself and a unique experience in itself.

Rohtang Pass permit is required to travel beyond Rohtang pass in case you travel to Rohtang Pass from Manali side. Hence, travel to Spiti from Shimla helps you avoid the process of getting the Rohtang Pass permit first.

Best time to visit Spiti valley

The duration between the months of mid-May to mid-October is the best time to travel to Spiti Valley. This is when the roads open after being blocked by snow during winter.

The temperature remains well within 15-20 degrees Celsius along with a gentle breeze. The valley is dotted with vibrant flowers and green vegetation. Woolens – sweaters and light jackets are recommended as the nights are cold.
